What is Scentsy and how does it work?
You’ve probably come across Scentsy before – and may have even given their products a try. ‘Aren’t they just candles?’ I hear you say. Well, candles are a big part of the business, but that’s only the beginning.
They have a wide range of scented products from diffusers, oils, car bars for your car and even laundry liquid to make your clothes smell lovely.
Created by husband and wife back in 2004, Scentsy doesn’t have stores, instead they are a direct selling company, using 170,000 consultants worldwide to sell their products either online or through Scentsy parties.
What you need to get started?
To get started you’ll need to find a consultant to sign up with. Now, this is pretty simple – just go to Scentsy.com and search by name or if you don’t know anyone you can click the ‘near me’ tab to find consultants in your local area.
It’s free to sign up, however, you’ll need to pay £85 upfront for your starter kit which contains lots of different samples to get you started. It has warmers, scent bars, oils and also catalogs, order forms, product lists and guides to making the most out of Scentsy.
How much will you earn?
The level of commission you earn would be based on how many points in PRV you have each month. Lost already? PRV stands for ‘Personal Retail Volume’ and put simply, the more products you sell, the more points you earn and the more commission you will get.
The first tier of earning is 20% on the first 1000 points in PRV and then 25% on everything over that. And, if you hit 2000 points in any one month then you get an extra 5% on top.
But that’s not it, if you have a team working under you then you can earn additional bonuses depending on how well your team does.
How easy is it to do?
If Scentsy is new to you, don’t worry – they offer online training, business tools and free marketing resources online to help you from the start.
Some reviews say that consultants have struggled with selling scented goods online in the past and tend to go towards the party plan model instead. It may take more effort and planning but you’ll be able to help multiple customers experience the products at the same time.
Adding to that, Scentsy has something that other candle brands don’t have. Wickfree candles, the safer alternative to traditional candles. Market these to the right kind of audience and the jobs a good’un.
Who is it suited to?
Like other direct selling companies, if you are going to give it a go – it’s best to do it alongside another source of income to take the pressure off a bit until you find your feet.
It’s all about reaching the maximum amount of customers with the least amount of effort. That being said, it would be more suited to those who have a bigger social media following. This is where your first customers will come from and it’ll give you the perfect platform to start building your own team as well.
Advantages
- Flexibility – You can choose when and where you work.
- Freedom – You can master your own work-life balance.
- Unique – Scentsy sells different products to other candle companies – you can play on this.
Disadvantages
- Unpredictable – you can never guarantee how busy your sales will be.
- PSV pressure – you need at least 200 points in your PSV to keep your account active each month.
Conclusion
Candles have never been more popular. With the global fragrance market expected to grow an average of 5.9% every year through to 2026, that’s a lot of potential customers. If there’s a time to give this opportunity a try, its now.
