What is Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing?
Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing has been running since December 2016 and is run by one of the biggest names in Irish racing. After over three decades in the Irish press, Declan launched this service on the Betfan website, so I thought it was about time I took a look.

There is no question about whether or not this man knows his stuff. The question here is how well that knowledge translates into enough winners to make it worth your while. I have to admit I had very high hopes for this service and I really wanted this to be good – but was I right?
How does Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing Work?
At first look, it seems promising. These selections are purely from Irish meets and there are usually tips every day there is racing. The number varies according to how many Declan things are potential winners and can be anything between 2 and 8.
The odds are usually quite sensible for the win singles with the higher odds reserved for the each way tips. There’s nothing complicated here and no real rush to get them on as the prices I saw were quite stable. You’ll be staking 4 or sometimes 5 points each time which means some days you’ll have 30-35pts at risk.
How long does Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing take to set up?
Before you can do any of this, you’ll need to get signed up and part with your money. Luckily, it’s a quick and painless process (especially if you’re already a Betfan member) and you’ll get the usual welcome email containing details of your starting bank and staking plan.
You should be able to do all of this with your usual bookmakers, so there’s no real need to open any new accounts. For your own convenience, the number of tips someday means you should get everything set up on your phone if you haven’t already.
How long does it take to use Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing?
That way, regardless of what you’re doing you can just work your way through them when they arrive. Even on the days when Declan finds 8 viable tips, this shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to get them on.
Yes, you could do these on the exchanges and you might even get slightly better odds, but you won’t save any time. The liquidity should be there but you’ll lose any BOG (best odds guaranteed) benefits you might get from a bookmaker, and you can’t forget the commission charge.
How much can you make with Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing?

I have to admit, I was expecting better results than this. 831pts over 33 months is far from awful, (21pts/month on average) but given the pedigree of the tipster, you’d set your expectations higher than this. The ride to that 831pts was a bit bumpier than I expected too.
In the last 12 months, there have been 3 months where there was a profit of over 80pts and 3 months with an 80+pts loss. With these ups and downs, 2019 ended just about even. That is a lot of points staked to end the year pretty much where you started.
How much does Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing cost?
That’s not a lot to show for a whole year, and that’s before you take fees into account. It’s £15 for a week, £45 for 28 days, £126 for three months or £214 for six months. These are quite hefty fees for the overall profits and would have left you in deficit for the last 12 months.
The last 12 months would have also blown a 100pt bank wide open so you’ll want to have 200pts in reserve. At £10/pt that’s £2000 you’ll need in the locker before you get started which won’t be for everyone, especially when you look at the returns.

Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing Review Advantages
Having a big name involved is going to give you confidence. Declan has been involved in this industry since 1979 so you can’t deny he knows his stuff. There’s no gimmick here and he just picks what he thinks will win, so you know you’re getting the tipsters best.
The tips are straightforward and don’t rely on any long-shot accumulators to prop up some dodgy selections. You’re not under too much pressure to your bets on and when it’s going well the winners arrive at a steady rate.
Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing Review Disadvantages
Unfortunately, it doesn’t go well as often as it should. There have been some terrible losing months that mean that over the last 12 months you would have lost money after fees. Those fees are quite hefty for the profits and you’ll need a bigger bank than you would expect.
Declan O’Donoghue – Irish Racing Review Conclusion and Overall Rating
I wanted to like this, but I’ve ended up disappointed. The numbers don’t lie and they are simply not good enough, especially over the last 12 months. This service is another one that ticks all of the boxes except the most important one, which means I can’t recommend this.
I was expecting a big name and ended up with a big ‘no’.
